Feeling jealous because his girlfriend was still in contact with her ex, a man from Oregon Oregon shot the former boyfriend over a dozen times in a drive-by shooting. David Anthony Baynes was convicted found guilty on Thursday in a bench trial overseen by Judge Ricardo Menchaca from Washington County, Oregon.

He said it was self-defense, but investigators did not find a weapon on the deceased Adam Woodall, said authorities.

Baynes is guilty of second-degree murder, using a weapon unlawfully, and having a firearm while being a felon. He had previously been found guilty of manslaughter in 2008, according to authorities.

The victim had dated Baynes’ girlfriend in the past, and the defendant was envious that they were still in contact.

“Mr. Baynes left the woman’s home in Forest Grove, Oregon and saw the victim approaching the home in a minivan,” authorities said of the incident on Sept. 18, 2022. “He pulled his truck up next to the victim’s van and shot the victim 15 times with a handgun. Each bullet entered the victim’s body, and he died within minutes.”

According to prosecutors, Baynes fled, discarded his gun, and drove to a rural area of Yamhill County, where he hid overnight — covering his truck with a tarp and resetting his phone to avoid detection by the police. He slept in blackberry bushes.

However, a deputy found and arrested him the next day.

Baynes claimed that Woodall was armed, but authorities found nothing at the scene, prosecutors said. The victim was not armed.

Investigators later found the murder weapon.

“The Washington County District Attorney’s Office wishes to thank the multiple law enforcement agencies who worked on this case, the Forest Grove Police Department, Beaverton Police Department, and the Washington County Major Crimes Team. In addition, the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office, Newberg Police Department, and the Oregon State Police Forensic Lab all assisted with this investigation,” prosecutors wrote.

Sentencing is scheduled for April 24. Baynes will remain behind bars pending the hearing.
