When they couldn't find any, they decided to attack any male in the area. According to the Ventura County Star, the victim was chosen by chance. They saw the victim moving his car to avoid a parking ticket outside his home.
Hernandez kept watch while Calderon approached the victim with a sawed-off shotgun, demanded to know his gang affiliation, and shot him even after he said he wasn't in a gang.
After shooting Herrera in the neck at close range, Calderon and Hernandez fled the scene.
Herrera's family found him slumped over in his car and he later died at a hospital.
Surveillance video showed Calderon buying a pizza at a restaurant 25 minutes after the murder.
Days later, he sold the murder weapon to another gang member, and the police found the gun during a search.
More than three years later, Calderon, who was already serving five years in prison for a robbery, was charged with Herrera’s murder.
Local CW Television Network KTLA, reported from court records, that a recording captured him “bragging about the killing to another inmate.”
Hernandez, his partner, admitted guilt to a charge of voluntary manslaughter and is awaiting sentencing on June 18, online court records indicate.
