Tevin Terrell Semien, 29, confessed to murdering Karon “Dinkers” Conneywerdy Smith, his girlfriend’s relative, with a brick before dumping the remains in a wildlife refuge. (YouTube screengrab via KFOR; mug shot from Navarro County Jail via KFOR.)

A man said his girlfriend requested him to murder a relative she was furious with, so he fatally beat her with a brick, placed her body in the trunk of her car and got rid of the remains in a Oklahoma wildlife refuge before being apprehended and leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase that culminated in a collision in Texas.

Tevin Terrell Semien, 29, acknowledged his guilt for second-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm in the death of Karon “Dinkers” Conneywerdy Smith, 68, whose body was discovered in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, per a news release. As part of his admission of guilt, Semien confessed to intentionally and deliberately killing Smith. Co-defendant Nicole Leigh Logsdon, 24, pleaded guilty in January to being an accessory after the murder and confessed to aiding Semien in his effort to avoid arrest and prosecution. Semien may face a life sentence in federal prison. Logsdon could face up to 15 years in federal prison.

The affidavit said Smith was discovered deceased in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. She showed signs of being violently attacked on her face and head.

Two days later, investigators combed through her residence in Lawton, Oklahoma, and found blood consistent with a violent altercation, according to court documents. Her car was also absent.

Law enforcement spotted her vehicle with Semien and Logsdon inside on May 21, 2023, driving south of Dallas, Texas, and attempted to pull them over, but the vehicle evaded and tried to escape at high speed.

The pursuit concluded when the vehicle crashed into a lake, and Semien and Lodgson attempted to flee but were apprehended and taken into custody.

During an interrogation with authorities that day, Semien initially denied involvement in the death before admitting that he had killed her, stating Lodgson was his girlfriend, a relative of the victim.

He said Lodgson requested him to kill Smith because she was upset with the eventual victim. He informed investigators he was unsure if Lodgson was serious, but she persisted in asking him to kill Smith. Semien admitted that he eventually agreed to kill Smith, stating he went to her home, fatally struck her with a brick, placed her body in the trunk of her car, and disposed of her body in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

Smith was warmly remembered at a candlelight vigil on June 9, 2023.

“Dinkers was loved by so many and will be greatly missed every single day,” the Comanche Nation reported. “She lived a life of service and never met a stranger. She would welcome anyone with open arms and care for those in need.”

Her obituary stated she was affectionately known as Dinkers, and that she “got her nickname when she was little from her favorite cartoon Dink’s.”

“She was a happy kid who couldn’t wait to be big enough to walk to the corner store with her big sister and cousins,” the obituary also said.
