A sheriff’s deputy in Idaho was fatally shot on Saturday night while approaching a driver’s window at a traffic stop.

27-year-old Ada County Deputy Tobin Bolter passed away on Sunday morning after being shot in the neck, according to the Idaho Statesman..

According to Ada County Sheriff Matt Clifford, footage from the scene indicated that the deputy did not reach the window before being shot.

Sheriff Clifford mentioned that the 65-year-old assailant had an outstanding $3,000 warrant for his arrest, but it is not yet known why Bolter pulled him over or why the assailant fired at the deputy.

The assailant, identified as Dennis Mulqueen, was later shot by police in Boise and was taken to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, where he died, as reported by KMVT..

Boise police stated that they found Mulqueen’s deserted car at around 9:30 p.m., 30 minutes after the deputy was shot, at the intersection of W. Dorian St. and S. Roosevelt St., and then located “a subject believed to be the shooting suspect” outside a home several blocks away. Police reported that the suspect was uncooperative as they sought to apprehend him peacefully.

Shortly after midnight, Mulqueen fired at the officers. A Boise officer shot back, hitting him. The involved officer has been put on administrative leave while the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force carries out an investigation.

Bolter had joined the Ada County Sheriff’s Office in January but had been in law enforcement for seven years, previously serving in Meridian, Idaho, and Pleasant Hill, California, according to the Statesman.
