A woman from San Diego County was discovered dead from gunshots in her residence and the person suspected of killing her — her estranged husband — was found dead in a nearby county shortly after.

The 9-year-old child of the couple, who lived with the mother, was thought to be missing at first, but deputies later found the child and confirmed that they were not at home during the shooting incident. KNSD reported.

Deputies were informed of the situation by a family member who called 911 twice on Tuesday morning. They discovered Ashley Bird, 35, with a gunshot wound to the head, lying on her couch.

Police stated that Bird had initiated divorce proceedings from her husband, 39-year-old Christopher Bird, last August, and the house had been put up for sale a month ago.

Deputies started looking for a male suspect, and Orange County deputies later found Christopher Bird dead in his vehicle at Calafia Beach Park in San Clemente that morning. His cause and manner of death will be determined by an autopsy, KSWB said.

Lt. Michael Krugh said the 9-year-old child was safe and with family.
