Oklahoma investigators are attempting to figure out why a spouse and dad murdered his wife and three sons but saved their youngest, a 10-year-old boy, before ending his own life.

According to ABC News, 42-year-old Jonathan Candy reportedly killed his wife Lindsay Candy, 39, and their sons Dylan, 18, Ethan, 14, and Lucas, 12, before committing suicide. At around 9:35 a.m. on Monday, the surviving boy called 911 and reported waking up to find his whole family dead in their west Oklahoma City home.

Investigators suggest the shooting occurred after an argument between the parents late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

“At some point, he (Jonathan Candy) armed himself with a gun, he shot her multiple times, killing her,” Knight said. “After that, he systematically went through the home shooting and killing the children.”

Police are uncertain why the 10-year-old was spared during the attack, Knight said, and there were no previous reports of domestic violence or service calls to the police.

Investigators intend to interview friends and family members to gather additional information, Law&Crime reports. A relative took in the surviving child.

“I know that’s a question everybody has,” Knight said “That’s a question we have, too. In the end, nobody ever is going to have an answer for that.”

“Certainly most horrible for that young man who woke up and found that carnage inside the home.”

Anyone with information about the case should contact the homicide tip line at 405-297-1200.

If you or someone you know is experiencing mental health issues or having thoughts of self-harm, call or text 988, Oklahoma’s Mental Health Hotline, or 911.
