A person accused of killing a police officer in Ohio on Saturday night has been killed after a standoff at a home several miles from the initial shooting.

Scott Meyer, the Police Chief of Euclid, stated that officers were dispatched to a residence on Saturday night just before 10 p.m. following a report from a woman claiming that she and her child were being threatened by the child’s father, CBS News made this report..

Meyer mentioned that officers went into the backyard of the home and were surprised by gunfire.

Officer Jacob Derbin was the sole officer hit by the gunfire, and despite being taken to the hospital, he died later that night.

WOIO provided details naming the suspect as 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn who was last seen driving a Volkswagen Passat. He was later found about nine miles away at a home in Shaker Heights, where he was involved in a tense standoff with tactical teams, according to Meyer. Vaughn refused to leave the house but was eventually discovered dead inside. Authorities did not disclose how he died or whether he exchanged gunfire with officers at the scene.

Officials stated that no one else was harmed.

Derbin, aged 23, was a military veteran and had only been with the Euclid Police Department for less than a year, Meyer explained. He was due to be married in July and was the son of a Euclid police officer.

Meyer described Derbin as an exceptional individual with a compassionate heart and a captivating smile.

He added, “The world is a better place with him in it.”
