A 17-year-old from Mississippi has been accused of causing the death of a 15-year-old girl by shooting her at a housing complex in Hattiesburg.
The teenager, who has been treated as an adult but hasn't been named due to being underage, faces a charge of first-degree murder. the Pine Belt News reported. He was taken into custody and placed in the Forrest County Correctional Facility on Saturday.
The shooting took place early on Monday morning at Pineview Apartments, according to Tate Rutland, a spokesperson for the Hattiesburg Police. Rutland stated that officers were informed of gunshots just before 5 a.m. and found Jayna Lumzy non-responsive in an outdoor stairwell.
Police provided initial medical assistance until paramedics arrived, but she did not survive.
