The Michigan State Patrol stated that the two kids discovered the unsecured firearm in their grandparents’ bedroom at their home in Garfield Township on Monday afternoon. The younger boy was already dead by the time officers arrived.
Authorities said they would pass their investigation to the Newaygo County prosecutor once it’s finished.
“The family is grieving, so remember to hold your kids close and give them extra love tonight,” said Lt. Michelle Robinson. according to WZZM.
Earlier this year, Michigan implemented a new law requiring gun owners to secure unattended firearms if children are expected to be around.
Lt. Robinson emphasized the importance of parents obtaining gun locks for their firearms, which are available for free at various Michigan police agencies.
